Movie: "Whale Rider"

'The Maori, natives of New Zealand, believe that their ancestors crossed the ocean with canoes. But the natives of Whangara and the East-Coast think that more than thousand years ago their ancestor Paikea reached the country on the back of a whale, which saved him after his canoe capsized. Since then every generation has a male descendant who bears the title of a Whale Rider and is the head of his tribe.

Now it is time for a new inheritor. But when the white hope died and only his twin sister survives, the tribe leader Koro (Rawiri Paratene) feels incapable to accept his granddaughter Pai(kea) (Keisha Castle-Hughes) as the new head in the future.

Koro, convinced that the misfortune of his tribe began with the birth of Pai, appeals his folk to bring him all the sons to choose one of them as the new leader. This one shall lead the tribe through all its troubles.

The twelve years old Pai, who loves her grandfather Koro more than anyone in the world, has to rebel against him and a thousand years old tradition in order to fulfill her destiny.

In the most successful movie of New Zealand director Niki Caro throws a touching glance on the struggle of a brave girl against old traditions and for love and tribute.
