The journalist Ayu Utami became famous for her first book "Saman" not only in Indonesia but also in Germany and other parts of Europe. Her very first work has been awarded several prizes. Now the second novel is to be published in German language.
"In 'Larung' the reader will be reunited with Saman, Yasmin, Sihar, Laila and her friends. Her stories deal with those perspectives and topics that reflect the social and political circumstances under the regime of Suharto. One of the leading topics is coping with the trauma caused by the mass murder after the attempted coup in September 1965.
The journalist Ayu Utami was an engaged critic of the Suharto regime and this is why she was banned from writing professionally. The social upheavals in Indonesia run like a red thread through her prose.
We are pleased to welcome on this evening Peter Sternagel, translator of Ayu Utami's works and expert on Indonesia. The audience will be definitely satisfied due to the knowledgeable and appealing moderation.
