Canada's literature is as diverse as the landscapes of this second largest country on earth. For decades, Canadian literature was dominated by its powerful neighbour in the South. But authors such as Margret Atwood, Yann Martell, Miriam Toews, Jane Urquart, Alice Munro, Leonard Cohen and Michael Ondatje reveal that this country produces many great independent writers. Since the 19th century, writers have been cultivated their individual style which is still specific for the works of many Canadian authors. This also includes a black humour that is very typical for Canada. The country was already settled 12,000 years ago, and it is not least the voices of the first inhabitants that contribute to the diversity of Canadian literature today. Their importance has only been recognized in recent years.
This variety is worth discovering. The Frankfurt Book Fair was supposed to be a big festival this year in honor of this exciting literature. Even if Canada will not be physically present in Frankfurt, we can do the same as the first French settlers who settled the East around 1600: We can also embark on an adventure journey into this literature and discover fertile new territory.
This year there will be also literature on prescription, even if the venue changes. The Kur-Apotheke Wolter will present this evening as a guest in the Museum at the Rothaarsteig and a medicinal herb from the host country should not be forgotten.
