Emil has moved with his mother to the city, but he feels lonely until he finds out that his neighbour is a pelican dressed like a human being. Emil and the pelican become friends and Emil helps the bird who wants to be a human to get along with the challenges of everyday life.

The pelican in turn teaches Emil important facts about home, family and friends. Leena Krohn´s story deals with the complicated side of life like being on the margins of society, loss and loneliness but also enjoyment of life. Her masterly story is amusing but at the same time very thoughtful.

This reading is an opportunity for visitors to reflect, to discuss and to talk to the author.

Leena Krohn

Leena Krohn is a Finnish author. She is born on February 28, 1947 in Helsinki. She writes novels for adults and children, short stories, and essays. Her work has been translated into many languages ​​and won several awards. 'Emil and the Pelican Man' was filmed by Liisa Helinen under the title 'The Pelican Man' in 2004, and shown in 2005 at the Berlinale in the children's program.

Anke Michler-Janhunen

Anke Michler-Janhunen, born in 1970 in Halle/Saale, married, one daughter (born in 2008). Graduated a Master´s degree in sociology, Finnish and cultural studies at the universities of Greifswald, Berlin, Turku and Helsinki. She has been living and working since 2009 in Turku as a freelance translator, interpreter (simultaneous and consecutive), editor, tourist guide/tour leader and teacher of the German language.

2004-2008: head of press and public relations city marketing in Halle (Saale) GmbH.

2002-2004: head of culture and public relations work of the Franckeschen Stiftungen, Halle. Voluntary work as a press officer for the German-Finnish Society.
