by Aki Kaurismäki
Aki Kaurismäki belongs to the most successful stage directors in Finland and therefore it is a duty to show one of his films in the course of the Literaturpflaster Finland.
The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung certifies: “With regard to current cinema productions Kaurismäki's characters are a big exception as they combine harsh tenderness and an almost cautious way of caring.”
His films are always characterized by some scurrility but at the same time by biting humor. Aki Kaurismäki's work has been honored with several international awards and thus it is predestinated to enrich the program of the Filmkunsttage organized by the Capitol Kino-Center.
On two evenings his film "The Man without a Past" is presented in the context of the Literaturpflaster. Pandora Film Distribution sums up the plot of this masterpiece: “An unnamed man (Markku Peltola) gets attacked and robbed in a train. He is declared dead by the doctors but he survives and he starts his life from scratch with amnesia, he lives in container dwellings at the riverbank, finds clothes with help from the Salvation Army and falls in love with a Salvationist (Kati Outinen). He returns to life due to his toughness, fantasy and his will to survive. When he becomes unwittingly involved in a bank robbery the cops succeed to figure out the man's identity. Does that mean he will he have to return to his first life that is still out of his mind?”
