Introduction: Otto Marburger
The Aurora borealis is one of the most fascinating natural phenomena on earth, but the northern LIGHT is even more. The further you reach to the North, the flatter the angle at which the sun moves, the more vivid appears the daylight. The position of the sun and the exceptionally clear air produce very saturated colours that leaves everyone astonished. This northern light can be extremely cold, like close to the Arctic ice, but more often extremely warm, like in the morning fog above a lake.
This light is the main theme of the exhibition Nord-LICHT and it often initiates Klaus-Peter Kappest's photographic work. The contact with the people of the North turn out to be as warm and illuminating. The culture of the Sámi and Lappish people is characterized by affinity with nature and helpfulness. It is an extraordinary experience for the traveler to get to know those people, who belong to the indigenous people, to learn about their way of thinking, their attitude towards life and their everyday life. Not only the special light is a central theme of Kappest’s photo series, but also the culture of the ancient people of the Sámi, who are threatened by extinction, plays an important role in his photographic work. The pictures of his exhibition tell the story of the Sámi's fate.
