"Brazil, Brazil - Discoveries in a literary continent"

"Brazil, Brazil" is the title of the novel by João Ubaldo Ribeiro (* 1941). This novel mirrors historical and social, cultural and everyday occasions of life in Brazil in the 19th century. It can be considered as a historical kaleidoscope which is the origin of fantastic reality of a country full of contradiction and suspense.

The literary scholar Ralf Schnell, patron of the "Literaturpflaster", uses this novel (appeared in 1988) as an approach for his introduction to modern Brazilian literature. He depicts the development of this kind of literature since 1960 in a brief summary. Against this background he describes current aspects and concise contours especially of the Brazilian novel. He will particularly concentrate on works whose authors are guests in Bad Berleburg this year.

This introduction is the start of the literary canon of this year's Literaturpflaster "Brazil".
