The film tells the story about two boys who grow up in one of the many favelas of Rio. They have got different personalities and different dreams; Dadinho, the cold-blooded and the calm Buscape. Dadinho turns out to be the most dreaded drug dealer of Rio. Buscape succeeds to be a famous photographer as he desired.

The film depicts the different ways of life of the two young men until the break out of the gang warfare in the "City of God".

Xavier Naidoo is the German voice of the narrator Buscapé.

The film has been nominated for four Oscars in 2004.

It is very impressive that the majority of all actors were amateur actors who have been recruited in the slums around Rio. Alexandre Rodrigues (Buscapé) actually lives in the "City of God".

A film night that gets under the skin.
