Photo Exhibition:
"Canudos - a war at the end of the world"

Markus Kirchgessner
Plakat: Fotoausstellung von Markus Kirchgessner: 'Canudos - ein Krieg am Ende der Welt'

by Markus Kirchgessner

Introduction: Dr. Jochen Dietrich, artist and art educator
(Siegen)

The photographer Markus Kirchgessner searched for traces: He travelled into the dry area around Sertão because the classic of Euclides da Cunha "Krieg im Sertão" ("War in Sertão"), a journalistic eyewitness report about the extinction of an orthodox group at the beginning of the 19th century, animated him to deal with this issue. At this place he traced the report of Cunha and created an impressive photo spread which tells insightful stories. Visitors will gain detailed insight into the barren area and people fighting for their existence in the inhospitable landscapes. This exhibition provides an extraordinary combination of literature and photography.

The black-and-white pictures will invite visitors to deal with them in an intense way. After having read the classic of Cunha there can be constituted a lot of allusions to his opus.
