Aka Morchiladze: Reise nach Karabach

Reading by Aka Morchiladze

Moderation: Rikarde Riedesel

Aka Morchiladze is one of the most famous authors in Georgia. In the beginning his novel appears like a road movie, but it actually turns out to be a description of war in Armenia and Karabach. In the middle of this chaos the reader gets to know the protagonist Gio, a completely unpolitical person and an eternal adolescent who regrets to having lost his big love.

Tiflis in 1992: There was no government any more in Swiad Gamsachurdia, the president has fled the country. There is anarchy and paramilitary units of the Sakartwelos Mchedrioni (Georgian troopers) patrol the streets of Tiflis. The young Georgian Gio was persuaded by his crazy friend Goglik to travel to Azerbaijan with his old Lada. They want to buy cheap drugs and smuggle them to Georgia. They intend to return the same evening. The situation in this area is very unclear, civil war and chaos make it on the one hand harder on the other hand easier for them. Gio and Goglik have to cross numerous and partly semi-official borders, contact middlemen and face the challenge to find the right way in the dark no man´s land. As they have lost orientation and someone opens fire their trip takes an unexpected turn.
